Marie Curie’s response to The Business Committee’s Legacy Report of the Fourth Assembly.

1.      Marie Curie welcomes the changes to Oral Assembly Questions and particularly welcomes the introduction of spokespersons questions. We believe these further hold the government to account and allow opposition spokespeople to ask more detailed and in depth questions than they had previously been able to. We also believe that it ensures that Ministers are on top of the widest range of issues, rather than just the 15 tabled questions.

2.      We welcome the continued use of Urgent Questions, but feel that for clarity and public record a list of rejected Urgent Questions should be published. This we believe would go a long way in assessing the level of political interest in ongoing events, drawing further attention to areas which AMs feel need to be raised as well as creating a more open and transparent system of scrutiny.

3.      Marie Curie has no issues in the way that committees balance their policy, financial and legislative scrutiny. We also have no issue with the size or political make up of committees.

4.      We would like the Business Committee to seriously consider ensuring that every committee enquiry carried out is relevant to the future prosperity of Wales. The Welsh Government has recently introduced the Well-being of Future Generations Act and we would like to see a written statement in every committee report following an inquiry outlining how any recommendations made will meet needs of the both the present generation without compromising the those of future generations.
